Fortnite and Gears of War developer Epic Games is in the process of building the Epic Games Store, which could potentially lure Mac and Windows developers away from Valve's industry-dominant Steam platform.Tuesday, December 04, 2018, 11:08 am PT (02:08 pm ET)
Ive read some reviews stated that games run better on Macs running windows but I am curious am i better off buying the games on the app store or just using the steam versions which i already own since I have them on Steam.
The Epic Games Store is 'launching soon' for PC and Mac, Epic said on Tuesday. The key draw for developers will be an 88/12 revenue split, much more favorable than the 70/30 normally offered by Steam or Apple's Mac App Store. This cut will be even better for companies that rely on Epic's Unreal game engine, since they'll be able to skip royalties, according toTechCrunch.
Valve has in fact announced its own change in revenue payments to keep developers onboard. Though the company is still claiming 30 percent from developers with under $10 million in revenue, from that point the cut drops to 25 percent, and lastly 20 percent at the $50 million mark.
Steam has had little real competition for years, its main multiplatform rivals at the moment being GOG (Good Old Games) and the Humble Store. There are other online stores for Mac and Windows, but many of them are publisher-exclusive, such as EA's Origin.
The Mac App Store has been held back by mostly by its audience, since the Mac userbase is still a minority that developers consider secondary. That's in part because most Macs are equipped with mobile or integrated graphics chips, which can't keep up with the full-sized GPUs found in many Windows PCs. Even within those limitations developers have been keen to avoid Apple's strict rules and 30 percent cut.

Applications :: TF2 On Steam Mac Not On Par With Bootcamp?
Sep 26, 2010Has anyone played Team Fortress 2 on Steam for Mac? I just installed it today on my MBP (config is in my siggy), but I'm pretty disappointed because it's obviously not as smooth and fast as in my Bootcamp.I turned most of my settings to at least Med (and some to Low), turned off Antialiasing, but kept resolution of 1440x900, yet it's still laggy/choppy esp. when there's more people involved... (it was fine in Bootcamp on even better settings).I get like 20-25 fps in OS X, which pretty much sucks

May 10, 2010After my experience with the Starcraft II demo I have to say I'm hesitant to use the Mac Steam and just stick with bootcamp. Because of DirectX, games just seem to run better on my Windows side. Anyone planning on scrapping Windows for the Mac Steam client? It's nice to see more games coming to Mac but they still seem crippled by OpenGL.

May 16, 2010I know you can transfer games from PC to PC, but I downloaded Portal on my Mac. I don't have constant internet access on my PC, so I don't want to download it there, but I can at least log in long enough to get it set to offline mode.
Question is, can I transfer the Mac version of Portal to the PC version of Steam?
Hope so. I'd like to play it with everything maxed out.

MacBook Pro :: Steam For Mac Vs. Bootcamp
Jul 12, 2010I'm forced to use my 13' mbp as my main computer for at least a couple of months. I had a desktop that I would normally game with but now that my sister is using it for schoolwork, that's not possible. I never even thought about using my mbp for gaming, let alone a 13' model, but now I'm getting desperate. I don't plan on running anything that intense. I usually play some Team Fortress 2 and Counter-strike: Source. My main question is: for those of you that have had experience, which would be a better solution for me? Using Bootcamp and installing Windows XP or getting Steam for Mac? I'm not sure how the process goes for Bootcamp. I'm imagining you would have to dedicate some hard drive space. On the other hand, I've heard that Steam on Mac runs pretty slow compared to it's Windows counterpart. Anyone know if this is true? Appreciate the help.

Mac :: Old Mac Pro Graphics Card That Is Running Out Of Steam
Nov 23, 2009I've got an old (late 2006) Mac Pro Quad (2 x 2 x 2.66 gHz) Xeon 3GB RAM with a Nvidia 7300 GT (256 MB video ram) that is running out of steam (mostly when it comes to Flight Simulator FSX on the XP side). Still running OSX 10.4.11 but I could switch to 10.6.xxx if I have to So the question remains: Is there any good, simple, easy way to upgrade the graphics (512 MB at least) or do I have to buy a new Mac Pro?

MacBook Pro :: Steam Needs To Self Update Before Launching
Aug 23, 2010I downloaded the 'yasu' mac cleaning software, ran a sweep on the mac, then restarted. It basically clears local and web cache, and some other stuff. Well now I can't play stagecraft 2 (like it ran good anyway), and get get on steam (like it ran good anyway). When trying to login to steam it prompts me that steam needs to self-update before launching. So I enter my name / password and nothing happens. I try to open vuze, a torrent program, doesn't even open. Safari works. What did I do? It seems it's not reading the admin permissions correctly. ITunes won't open either

OS X :: Valve Announces Steam For Mac, Will Allow Mac And PC Online Play
Mar 8, 2010Valve officially revealed Monday that its Steam online gaming service, along with the Source engine that powers titles such as Half-Life 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, is coming to the Mac in April.
Valve's library of games will be making the jump from Windows Machines, including Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series.
'As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients,' said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. 'The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.'
Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve, said the partners who sell games through the Steam online service, are 'very excited' about embracing the Mac platform. The statement would imply that developers other than Valve intend to make their titles compatible with the Mac.
'Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge,' Holtman said. 'For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.'
In addition, Valve confirmed that the forthcoming Portal 2 game will be the company's first simultaneous release for both Mac and Windows.
'Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,' said Josh Weier, project lead for Portal 2. 'We're always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.'
'We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,' said John Cook, director of Steam development. 'The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360.

MacBook Air :: Running Games Off Steam When Arrives On Osx?
Mar 25, 2010I'm debating on whether -- when they are upgraded -- to get the top of the line 15 inch macbook pro or the top of the line macbook air. I'm going to college in 2011 and I do hope to do a tad bit of gaming during part of my free time. I currently have a early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo processor and 2 gb of ram along with a 256 nvidia 8600m GT graphics card and a 5400 rpm 200 gb hdd. I can run call of duty 4 at almost maximum settings with little to no tearing, blurring, or lag during both single player and online play. Would the macbook air be faster than my current system? Could I run games like left for dead 2 or the steam ww2 game (i forgot what it's called) at medium to good quality? How about with the current macbook air? Would the macbook pro be a better choice? I absolutely love the size of the macbook air and the appeal of steam is that I don't need to use a disk to run the games (which would be good on a macbook air).
